Bellyful gets Auckland Airport grant for families in neonatal units

Bellyful has been awarded $12,000 from Auckland Airport’s Twelve Days of Christmas campaign. 

It’s being used to pay for the meals Bellyful Franklin and Bellyful East Auckland provide especially for the Middlemore NICU.

It can be hard to ask for help. Especially when a It can be hard to ask for help. Especially when a little voice tells you that someone else must need it more. We hear this from Bellyful recipients again and again. Riika felt it too. When her daughter was born, Riika had only recently moved to Whitianga. Her family and friends were back in Finland, the borders were closed, and there were no grandparents flying over or friends dropping in for a cup of tea. Her midwife referred her to Bellyful, but Riika didn’t think her family really needed it. They were managing. Surely Bellyful was for families having a much harder time than hers? Then Bellyful volunteer Fran knocked on her door. Because of COVID restrictions, Fran couldn’t come inside. Instead, they stood on opposite sides of the deck and talked. Fran listened. She understood what it was like to have a baby far from family. Years later, Riika can’t remember exactly what was in the meal containers, but she remembers how Fran made her feel. Riika later joined Bellyful Whitianga as a volunteer. The monthly Cookathons brought music, laughter, friendship and the village she had been missing. Five years after opening the door as a new mum, Riika is now the Branch Coordinator of Bellyful Whitianga, helping make sure someone else hears that same knock. Bellyful isn’t about deciding who is struggling the most. It’s about showing up for whānau with babies or young children who don’t have the support network they need, with free meals, kindness and no judgement. It’s okay to ask for and accept help. 💗

Aroha - love, empathy and compassion. Whanaungatanga - connection, community and belonging. And a phrase that is special to Bellyful: Kia manawa reka i te aroha To satisfy through aroha. Kia kaha te reo Māori. 💗

Now, we need your help to fill the freezers too. Pasta is only part of the meal. 🍝 Spaghetti September is bringing out some serious 🍝 Spaghetti September is bringing out some seriously creative ideas around Aotearoa! In Whitianga, the team has come up with a brilliant way to get local kids involved - Sam Spaghetti is going into hiding! 🔎 Every weekend this September, Sam will pop up somewhere different around town. A clue will be posted on the Bellyful Whitianga Facebook page, and kids and teens can head out to see if they can track Sam down and enter to win prizes. It’s just one of the many fun and creative things happening around the country as people get behind Spaghetti September and help fill Bellyful pantries and freezers for families who need us.
